IMAX Hubble 3D Movie Review

IMAX Hubble 3D was an absolute thrill ride taking viewers to galaxies far far away. First of all, let me say that we finally have a 3D film worth its salt. It seems like you can reach out and touch stars as they float in front of your face. It feels like the astronauts are standing right in front of you. I also can’t imagine a better narrator for this film than Leonardo Dicaprio who is such a huge advocate of taking care of our planet. Sit back as IMAX cameras take you on the space shuttle Atlantis to join the crew of seven as they make much needed repairs on the Hubble telescope. This is probably the closest that most of us will ever come to space travel.

IMAX Hubble 3D is phenomenal.

The film opens with background of the Hubble telescope peppered with awesome images that have been captured by this amazing machine. I was particularly amazed, as was our nine-year-old son with images of the “star nurseries” which showed stars and galaxies being born throughout the universe. The film also takes viewers along for some of the training that the astronauts had to take part in to be able to travel into space. They do a great deal of training in a huge pool as it is the closest thing to zero gravity here on earth. You really get an idea of how tedious the work they do up there is and potentially dangerous as well. One tear in their suit and they could die. They are particularly susceptible to tears in their gloves. The gloves are very thick and can make it difficult to do their work. They compare it to trying to do their work with “oven mitts” on. The astronauts also shared interesting info that kids will enjoy…how do you eat in space…how do you wash and use the toilet in space.

At just 43 minutes, the film is a great length for an educational, yet entertaining film. We all enjoyed it — myself, my husband and our son. This film is appropriate for all ages, however, children (maybe age 5+) who are beginning to develop an interest in space and astronomy will really enjoy this it. It made us sorry that we have never gone to see a space shuttle launch, especially now that NASA is retiring the space shuttle program after 30 years. A report issued by NASA’s Office of the Inspector General predicts that the space agency will have to fly some of its final missions in 2011.

Many of us Earthlings forget there is so much more out there — IMAX Hubble 3D reminds of just how vast the universe really is and it is growing all the time. It also reminds us of just how special and unique this planet of ours really is.
